» Saint Yrieix la Perche is a small town in the Haute Vienne (Limousin region), it was founded in AD. 572 by Aredius who built a monastery on the remains of a Roman villa. The town is situated on the border of the Dordogne, the Corrèze and Haute Vienne and is a gateway town for the Perigord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. Gold was mined locally until 2002 and the town grew with the discovery of kaolin locally (essential for the production of porcelain).

The Medieval centre is well preserved and a programme of restoration and improvement over the last several years means that the cobbled streets are a delight to wonder round. In summer the perfume of climbing roses pervades, St Yrieix prides itself on being a ‘ville fleurie’ and has marvellous flower beds all around the town. Each summer local artists and craftspeople display their wares in shops in an event that attracts large numbers of people. St Yrieix does not ‘die’ in the winter, the numerous shops remain open, the main market runs throughout the year on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month but there are other, smaller markets during the week.

There are numerous restaurants and cafes in the town, bakers and a very good patisserie! All the usual services are available, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths etc, there is also a hospital in the centre of town which provides x-rays, CT scans and has a travelling MRI scanner visit.

As for leisure, there is a cinema which has recently been refurbished, library, many local sports associations and a fantastic leisure centre with a number of indoor and outdoor pools. There is a lovely park 5 minutes walk from the house with a stream running through and children’s play area.

The town boasts two primary schools, a college and lycée.

St Yrieix is quite the gastronomic centre. Cul Noir pork is renowned locally for its flavour, as are the Limousin cattle. Madeleine cakes are made locally and sell directly to the public. The town is in the heart of the apple growing region and the Limousin Golden Delicious apples are sold all over France.

Markets for foie gras are held in the ‘Halles’ every year in the run up to Christmas.

St Yrieix has a railway station linking the town to Limoges and its airport.

Limoges airport with flights to Stansted, Liverpool, East Midlands and Southampton, Paris, Lyon etc is approx 45 minutes away. «
